My dad was fascinated by wood. We shared many conversations about it in his later years. He was always interested in pieces that celebrated something innate to the material. In this one, everything comes from the tree. The black is carbon from fire, and the ochre is oxidization, the grey is tannic acid. It's complicated, but the wood itself generates the differences. The inherent properties of this sycamore, from this particular place, at this moment, allow the work to be unique. I didn't get to share this work with him, but I know he would have loved it.
