Pure carbon. That's what fire reveals. The gasses trapped in the wood are burned away as the heat transforms the surface of the material. The remnant series has been as much about fire's power to strengthen as well as destroy. That duality is on display in this piece. It is burned from the inside out, the opposite of how it might occur in nature. Remarkably with this technique, the char is set in the piece. It doesn't rub off, it doesn't get your hands dirty, and it protects the wood from moisture and decay.
