Set of 16 Chinese elm bowls 4 x 5 in. Charred and finished in walnut oil. Each piece has a hand-carved edge and a distinct open-grain texture that only elm delivers. These pieces were nearly a year in the making. The cutting, curing, turning, and finishing over that extended time is an act of pure Patience. Though Patience is not my strong suit, I learn a lot when I'm forced to wait. Chinese elm is a tree I grew up with. Two stout trees still stand in front of my childhood home. As a kid, I dreaded mowing the yard under those trees–so many leaves. The wood is dense. The charring burns off the gasses trapped in the wood leaving behind the pure carbon surface— hence the name of this series—Remnant. The extraordinary nature of this material makes these pieces that much more special.
